New Ercan Airport Guide: Flights, Parking, Customs & International Transit

Guide to Cyprus's primary air gateway, the New Ercan Airport: Flight routes, parking tariffs, transit via Turkey to international destinations, and customs regulations.

Serving as the primary international air gateway for Northern Cyprus, the New Ercan Airport operates with a passenger capacity approaching 10 million annually, featuring a 3,100-meter wide-body runway and 9 modern passenger boarding bridges opened in July 2023.

For residents, university students, and international expatriates living in Cyprus, Ercan Airport marks the launchpad for global journeys. However, under international civil aviation frameworks (ICAO), all departures from Ercan route via mainland Turkish airports. Consequently, passengers bound for European, British, or American destinations must understand critical transit, luggage routing, and consular check-in protocols. In this guide, we review terminal operations, parking amenities, transit pathways, and customs compliance.

1. Terminal Architecture and Transit Links

The modern passenger terminal features centralized check-in islands, biometric security gates, dedicated family lounges, and a multi-level parking structure accommodating 1,500 vehicles with short-term and long-term subscription rates.

Airport Shuttles (KIBHAS):

Regular 24-hour KIBHAS shuttle coaches connect Ercan to Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, Güzelyurt, and Lefke, aligned with airline schedule banks.

2. Transit via Turkey: Essential International Flight Directives

Due to international air transit restrictions, flights departing Ercan touch down first at Turkish airports (Istanbul Airport IST, Sabiha Gökçen SAW, Ankara ESB, Izmir ADB, or Antalya AYT) before proceeding to global destinations.

Rules for Connecting Passengers:

• Through Check-in Baggage Routing: When traveling on single-ticket bookings via Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, or AJet to destinations like London, Rome, or New York, checked bags transfer automatically to your final destination without retrieval in Turkey.

• Airside Transit Exemptions: Passengers remaining in the sterile international airside transit lounge in Turkey do not require a Turkish transit visa. However, transfers requiring a physical change of airport (e.g. landing at SAW and departing from IST) require valid Turkish entry permissions.

• Document Authentication at Ercan Contoirs: Check-in personnel at Ercan verify destination visas (Cyprus UK Visa, Cyprus Schengen Visa, or Cyprus US Visa) before issuing international boarding passes.

3. Passport vs. National ID Rules

While Turkish and TRNC citizens can fly domestically between Turkey and Northern Cyprus using chipped national IDs, international onward transit strictly mandates presentation of a valid biometric passport at Ercan.

4. Currency Declaration and Customs Rules

Under TRNC Foreign Exchange directives, cash sums exceeding €10,000 (or foreign currency equivalent) must be formally declared to TRNC Customs upon departure.
